A distant view of the boat moving in the middle of the Marmaris sea
Marmaris, which is a port city connected to Muğla at the intersection of the Aegean and the Mediterranean, is a place that can be called a tourism paradise with many features. Marmaris; It welcomes thousands of tourists every year with its natural beauty, ancient cities, unique scenery covered with pine forests and yacht marinas. The fact that Marmaris Yacht Marina is the largest marina in Turkey makes this region very attractive for boat tours and blue cruise routes. However, it can be said that regular flights from Marmaris to Rhodes Island are another attractive feature.
Some materials found as a result of excavations in the Nimara Cave on Badr Island in 2007 show that the history of this place dates back to 2000 BC. While it is stated as ‘Fiskos’ in the sources of the first age, according to the sources of the historian Texier, ‘Fineks’ is stated as ‘Marmarios’ in the sources of Herodotus, and as ‘Mermeris’ in the sources of Piri Reis. The region started to be defined as Marmaris over time.
Places to See in Marmaris Center
There are many places to see and explore in Marmaris, which contains various natural and historical beauties. First of all, Marmaris Castle, located in the center of Marmaris, is one of the historical structures that should be seen. The castle was rebuilt by Suleiman the Magnificent during the Rhodes expedition, but before that it was first built in 2000 BC and then repaired in 1044 BC after the conquest of Marmaris by the Ionians and then Macedonian King Alexander. During the First World War, the walls of the castle were badly damaged due to the artillery fire of the French ships.
On the hill where the castle is located, there are also historical buildings from the Ottoman period in the 16th century. The buildings, which have undergone restoration over time, are now operated as restaurants and bars. Other navigable places in the center of Marmaris are Marmaris Dock and Marmaris Marina. This area is also close to Marmaris Castle and is known as the “Historical City Center”. While you’re here, don’t leave the castle without going to Marmaris Castle and Archeology Museum!
Resorts of Marmaris
While in the center of Marmaris, it is a holiday destination on its own. There are many beautiful places to swim or take a yacht tour around. We have told you the most beautiful ones of them.
İçmeler
Icmeler is one of the most visited towns after the center of Marmaris. Icmeler’s beach is much more preferred than Marmaris’s beach for most people. Transportation to Icmeler, which is 8 km away from the center of Marmaris, is very close. This place is also very suitable for water sports such as parasailing, canoeing and banana.
Turunç
Marmaris Turunc
Turunc can be the first choice for those who love a beach holiday in Marmaris. The beach, which has a clean and very beautiful sea, has both stony and sandy areas. For this reason, it is possible to say that those who prefer stony beaches also satisfy those who love sandy beaches. However, it should be noted that most of the beach in Turunç Bay is filled by hotel sun loungers. So you can rent sunbeds here. There is a public beach ahead of the beach, but this place is also quite small.
Selimiye Köyü
Selimiye Village is quite different from many holiday destinations in Turkey. As can be seen in many holiday destinations, it is not possible to see the overcrowded and eye-tiring activity of the town in Selimiye. Selimiye is a place that can be preferred by those who want to spend a more peaceful, quiet holiday in touch with nature. There are few things as pleasant as walking on the road where the sea stretches on one side of the places on the other. The only negative aspect is that there is a fee to enter the sea on one side of this walking path. In other words, the sea is lined up with hotel sun loungers. However, you can swim for free among the tree-lined hills at the Public Beach, a little further from the center.
It would be a big mistake to go back to Selimiye without visiting Turgut Waterfall. Turgut Waterfall is a dazzling place with every shade of green. You can take beautiful photos here and relax your soul with the sound and breeze of the waterfall.
Bozburun
“The gray stones are before us
We have loneliness in our pocket
In that flat growing night
Our only friends are the flamingos…”
The town where Bülent Ortaçgil composed songs: Bozburun. Bozburun, like Selimiye, is a very calm, quiet and peaceful place. It is generally preferred by those who want to have a quiet holiday as a tourist. However, this place is very popular especially in terms of yacht tourism. You can see dozens of boats and yachts in the sea. It is an ideal route for the Blue Cruise. But since it has a sea surrounded by pine hills, the sea is still, as Ortaçgil said. For this reason, it is ideal for those who want to spend a quiet and calm holiday.
